The monsoon makes most of India unwalkable, but the trans-Himalaya behind the Pir Panjal and Great Himalayan ranges is a cold desert: Spiti, Lahaul, Zanskar and Ladakh get almost no rain in July–August. That is the season for the Hampta Pass (which crosses into the rain shadow), the big expeditions, bike tours and every Ladakh itinerary.

Is it safe to trek in Himachal during monsoon?
Lower Kullu, Kinnaur and Kangra are landslide-prone in heavy spells — we avoid them. Spiti, Lahaul and Ladakh are dry and the Hampta Pass is the classic monsoon trek because its second half is in the rain shadow.
Best place to visit in August in the mountains?
Ladakh (Leh, Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri), Spiti valley and Zanskar — all at peak season in August.
