A first Himalayan trek should be short, scenic and well-supported — not a test of suffering. These trails stay under 4,300 m, climb gradually from Manali or Dehradun, and run as fixed group departures with a trek leader, guide-to-trekker ratio of about 1:8, and all camping gear included. Beas Kund and Kedarkantha are the classic first treks; Hampta Pass is the classic second.
Why these trips
- Maximum altitude 3,700–4,300 m with a gradual gain — AMS risk stays low
- 3–5 days door-to-door, so one long weekend plus a day of leave is enough
- Trek leader + local guide on every batch; camping gear, meals and permits included
- Roadhead within 2 hours of Manali or a day's drive from Dehradun

Beginner treks — FAQs
Which is the easiest Himalayan trek for a complete beginner?
Beas Kund (3,700 m, 4 days from Manali) and Kedarkantha (3,800 m, 5 days from Dehradun) are the two we recommend most. Both have short walking days (4–6 hours), established campsites and no technical sections.
How fit do I need to be?
If you can walk 5 km in an hour on flat ground and climb 4–5 floors of stairs without stopping, you can do any beginner trek on this list. Start a 4-week routine of brisk walking or jogging 30 minutes a day before the trek.
Is Hampta Pass suitable for beginners?
Hampta Pass (4,270 m) is a moderate trek — fine for a fit beginner, better as a second trek. The pass-crossing day is 8–9 hours with a steep snow section in June.
What gear do I need to buy?
Trekking shoes with ankle support, a 40–50 L backpack, a warm jacket and thermals. Tents, sleeping bags, mats, microspikes and gaiters are provided.
